Batara Surya

Batara Surya is the god of the sun, whose job is to shine the world, assisting the growth, life, and health of all living things in day-time.

Surya resides in the part of khayangan (heaven) called Khayangan Ekacakra. He has a chariot pulled by seven horses which was once borrowed by Batara Wisnu to vanquish King Watugunung, the king of Gilingwesi. This chariot is renown as the fastest, most stable, and also the easiest to handle among all the other vehicles of the gods.

Batara Surya, together with Batari Chandra were the first to discovered Kalarahu when the monster was trying to steal Tirta Amerta (special water that only gods are allowed to drink), and it was also because of Surya that Kalarahu's hiding place was discovered, making it possible for the gods to punish the monster.

Unfortunately, Kalarahu was already able to drink a small amount of Tirta Amerta, and so he gained immortality and impossible to kill. The gods were only able to decapitate the monster, making the monster's body died but its head alive.

Kalarahu's head was able to ran away from the gods, and he seek revenge on Batara Surya and Batari Chandra by trying to swallow them. But, since Kalarahu doesn't have a body anymore, every time he swallowed the sun or the moon, it just came out again from it's throat and that is why eclipse of the sun or the moon never stayed permanently.
